Abarth chassis??
'nothing to do with Abarth.

Does anyone know how the roof skin was constructed on these?
Barrie, who worked on the Gartrac steel replica tubs, described the construction process for the roof skin. On the Gartrac cars, he said it was done in several pieces. That appears to be the case on this tub that's for sale.

I've never seen an original in bare metal before, so I wouldn't know.
Does anyone else know how the roof skin was made? You wouldn't think there was much in the way of press tooling?

Price?

If it's an original tub, and if it has an ID.
It's got to be upwards of £150k?
That's just for the shell on it's own, and the majority of that value is the ID, I would have thought?
There's enough skill out there to make replica tubs, but without an ID, they're just expensive replicas, as the Gartrac cars were.

So with no chassis number and no engine number this is surely a replica ???................. just like a Hawk or LB ?...... When does it become an "Original" Strato's ??........... guess we have been over this ground before

I would have that makes Coy's statement as original somewhat dangerous? Ie leaves them potentially liable or do they always back that onto the seller for responsibility?

Do you think the "Abarth" thing might be deliberate Peter?
It's ok, we didn't say "Bertone"?

I thought there was still one of the Gartrac replica chassis sitting in eir factory or squirrelled away somewhere. Could this be it?

Looks like it is for sale in Athens?
Can't see that being a spare Gratrac shell for that reason.

It does seem like an odd mistake for such an established auction house, unless of course it is coming out of Abarth and is a left over from the original stock and was squirrelled away when all the rally/racing stuff was merged into Abarth. Or at least that is what I thought had happened when Lancia packed up Motorsport. Does seem odd especially if it is coming out of Greece and with all the kit of parts.

On the ID, would a replacement tub really have a new ID, would it not simply have the same ID as the original car it replaced? Or is that where you draw the line on what constitutes it being a 'New' car?

This is a neat thread. I have not heard of these shells made by gartrac before. For those of us that don't know much about them, what is the backstory?

They made 2. I'd need to hunt down the story and don't have it handy just now. It was on the old site.

Even in a hot climate (still rains in Greece) that bare metal has lasted well for 40 years with no paint on?.... Not even any surface rust.
I'm not sure I believe about coming from Abarth as a spares package either ( they have now changed the auction web page ) the spares look mainly second hand and gathered parts and even a spare shell should still have a chassis number or identification.
Our friend Tryphon was mentioning a few years ago that there were new copy chassis being made somewhere if I remember. I'm sure Mr Popper and friends are having kittens.

Quote from Tryphon on Ferrari chat circa 2006

"New tubs are being made as we speak Ian, false ones. 5 were made last year. A complete and unscrupulous business has been setup in Italy."

If you owned an original Stratos, you could use a 'new' chassis/tub to save the pukka one from any competition damage.

They had that all GT40 race at Goodwood last September.
How many of the original GT40 tubs were actually safe and sound when that race was taking place?

Judge the general FerrariChat feeling for yourself:
The 'cringing' (from two people HERE) (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/206-246/228243-dino-246-gts-replica-4.html), is a reaction to me posting a photo of my orange Hawk with a genuine Stradale steering wheel fitted.

A discussion about replica cars - (HERE (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/recreations-non-period-rebodies/355531-vintage-section-fake-replica-recreation-rebody-discussion-4.html))

Sold:
£39,794 for the chassis
£18,797 for the kit of Stradale parts

So, £58,591 for the lot.

'Just noticed a post on (this thread (http://www.forum-auto.com/sport-auto/photo-sport-auto/sujet378381-2415.htm)):
'says that the Bonhams Greece chassis is a Gartrac tub.
