View Full Version : What do you do for a living?
Wondering what people on here do for a living, Im guessing that most will be in a 'technical' type job?
Im a generator service engineer, travelling and working in lovely places like this..

doing stuff like this:

Previously Ive also worked a little bit on wind turbines, not very glamerous but makes for better pics:

Ive recently taken a job in the office, so less travelling and more time to spend in the garage!
Wondering what others on here do, probably best not to post pics if you're a mid-wife or work for MI5:cool:

Well we both got made redundant yesterday........ so now looking!
Blimey! Definitely more garage time for you then, Ian. Good luck with the job search. You should get paid for the good work you do here!
Some great shots there, Nick.
Love the vertigo inducing shot through the service hatch.
I used to like Arthur's shots of the ships engine rooms he used to work in.
I'm sure there is loads of interesting material for this thread among the members.

Sorry to to hear that Ian, hope you and Jayne are OK and good luck in finding something else..
So sorry to hear the news Ian, especially with both of you being caught at the same time. All I can say is that there is a silver lining out there somewhere. I know that you'll both get through this together.
I fix steam engines :-)

Interestingly I combine both of those industries. We build steam boilers for applications from running heating systems to powering turbines.
Latest thing being burning wood to produce steam - been a long cycle in the return that one.....
Redundancy - Route to a new opportunity - Hope your employer is in a position to be generous and not minimalist.

Likewise using wind and water as a power source, not that we will ever come close to meeting our demand for power from wind energy..
As Red5 has said I expect a lot of people on the forum to be doing Engineering/Construction or creative type work.
I don't think I could work in a non engineering role, also how else would you get your car built.;)
Spent many years building these before moving on to Hovercraft.

Now I spend my time in the design and construction of these, this was a few months ago doing a survey in Pakistan.

Intensive Care doctor - I have several of these sort of things to look after:
ETA: this is not one of my patients but a picture that has already been published in the national media with the patient's identity, which I have removed.
I think there has been a drift in the club over the last decade towards more professional engineering backgrounds rather than the amateur tinkerer that used to be the case. Perhaps this is the case over the "kit car" scene generally?

I take these apart..........then spend a long putting them back together again:confused:

That's a huge responsibility. You have my deepest respect and admiration.

No idea Chris - I certainly don't have an engineering background but a healthy dollop of common sense, being adept with my hands and an willingness to learn has got me from a nobody volunteer to part of a team helping rebuild and maintain these old timers (a good number are now over 100 years old). I've taken a similar approach to building the car; listening to advice offered, reading up on the basic fundamentals and making my own decisions (some good, some less so) and have nearly got there. If anything I suspect that there are less engineering based people around now as the industries which required them are (or have) dwindled. This doesn't really imply that most people taking up building a kit car haven't got those skills already available to them.
Retired senior police officer, I used to do things like this
and now emergency planner, I plan for things like this
originally served my time with United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (Sellafield), ended up in the drawing office, before embarking on my police career

I'm qualified in electrical and electronic engineering, and spent 10 years as an antenna engineer. Didn't like that but enjoyed messing about with structures and portable buildings, so about 20 years ago, I set up a small business manufacturing in Asia.
If you want to know more, read the book "Erections in the Far East" , available on Amazon ! (fortunately, I'm not David Rowley)

"has Neil subcontracted his new throttle bodies to you Phil?"

May be some of you know ; Retired now ( Since 5 years) I have been for 40 years mainly Fabrication manager ( and sometime 4 years pilot) of Le mans car prototypes

My job's boring, nondescript and takes but little of my time. However, in my spare time, I volunteer at a psychiatric hospital. On the addiction treatment ward. I've done so for seven years now.Ooh the famous people I've met and worked with in there. None of whom I can name! :)

I'm a time served electrician at the electricity board who moved through the ranks, to testing engineer, estimator and contracts manager for private companies before setting up my own electrical contracting company 13 years ago. Set up a plumbing department 2 years ago and the company now consists of around 20 staff turning over circa £1.2m a year. We work on all sorts of commercial buildings, schools, hospitals etc. but do do some interesting jobs on bridges too.

That looks nice, if I hadn't just bought myself a new Blackstar practice amp I could be tempted to have a go at one of those..

that I've also worked on in the past.
I make sweeties.. This is a new line that I'm installing just now.

Farming, it's our tercentenary, 300 years and 8 generations farming in Kent. At least that is what is over the front door, 1714, but it's probably longer than that.
Produce around 1500-2000 tonnes of wheat, 2-300 tonnes oilseed rape, 3-400 tonnes of other cereals a year. Don't ask how many loaves of bread/biscuits that makes...
In the past cauliflower, cabbage, peas, leaks, greens.
Used to have sheep, cows, pigs, but no more.
