Probably a stupid question but is a LHD steering column identical to a RHD
cheers

Yes. The columns and shrouds are identical AFAIK. The issue with an X19 column on a RHD car is that the ignition lock and shroud moulding fouls the dashboard moulding (on a Hawk at least and probably also on a LB). It's easy enough to rotate the lock around the column and cut a new slot for the locking mechanism to work but the shroud then needs to be modified to suit, it can be done but it's fiddly and fragile as the plastic is pretty thin.

I think it did on the early version but got remoulded later to suit.

Thanks Guy & Craig. Good to know I can get a column from a left hooker
