View Full Version : Another Hawk passed IVA
I'm pleased to say that Gordon Spencer's Hawk Stratos passed IVA at Gillingham yesterday. It is Brent Shirley's old car that we have been working on for him.
Engine is Beta Volumex which gave us a headache finding dating evidence. VOSA insisted on a build date, Fiat/Lancia have no engine records for the period. DVLA eventually issued a letter stating that the engine was fitted new to an original donor in 1984, which was accepted by VOSA.
Original exhaust system failed the noise test so we had to replace the silencer with a Hawk double pass unit, quite a lot of fabrication involved.
Speedometer also needed recalibrating by Speedy Cables.
Kit was purchased in 1990, through a number of owners, so it is a challenge upgrading stuff to current regulations, correct lens markings, wiring modifications etc.
Dealing with 25 year old components presents other challenges too...
Good to see another one ready for the road or paintshop....

That's great news Struan! Looks like my old set of wheels are back on the road again!
Guy
They were yours were they Guy?
We just fitted them, they look fine. We had to fit the rear spats though, for the inspector....
Well done to both you and Gordon, glad it's got through.

Hi Struan, Brent bought my Compomotives from me when I converted to five stud Coffin Spokes. I think he might also have bought my original dash, it was heavily modified. The lower part was red fibreglass I think with a different shape to the right of the steering wheel to mirror the original with the light switch mounted there. The binnacle has an extension to the upper lip that was quite deep, narrowing down the side and under the main switch run. There was also a moulding for the heater lever and the whole lot was trimmed in alcantara. I think that Brent also had the glovebox that went with it.
Here's a pic of my car with those wheels on it. There have been a few changes since then... In fact, the wheels on the front of the car now used to be on the back of mine with narrower ones on the front with 205*50*15s when it was in stradale guise!
Hope you've still got the centre caps?
Guy
Guy,
Yes I think we have the centre caps.
Not sure about the dash, no glovebox, I'd have to check the other details.

I have the dash and glovebox! Retrimmed in black Alcantara and sat in my lounge behind the sofa!

Must have sold it to someone else then. Probably John H? That's not my old one.
The fabled John H Stratos of legend..... don't believe it actually exists!

Well done Struan.
It's good to see Brent's old car running.
So you can do a Hawk in gel coat?, if you don't look too close?
Guy, Brent ended up with a couple of my wheels too, which were the same Compomotive split rim type as your's. Painted rims though, not polished.
Yes we have your wheels too, Chris.

That's right, fronts with tyres, rears without.
It's funny, I'll need 4 stud wheels for those hubs now.

Good choice! 1.346.1435 max meyer or 1329 lechler. Paint shop should find them.... It has a lot of black in it so is white in virtually all lights.
Excellent, many thanks...!

I have these wheels on my Hawk. 15"x 7.5" or 8" in front with 205/55 and 15"x 9.5" or 10" in the rear. What size tire is used for the rear? What make/brand are these wheels?
Thanks;
Tony

They are Compomotive TS501 wheels. I had these very same wheels with 225*50*15 on the rears when fitted to my car when it was a Stradale.

I have a group 4 tail on mine. Would I be looking at 245-255 or wider? The 225 will be much too narrow for it's big butt.

I am using 245 tyres on a 9" rear (different wheels), so 255's should fit fine on a 9.5 or 10", IMO 225's are really to small for those wheels.

Agreed. I have 225 on the back now and they are pulled a lot to get on the wheels. Granted, they are just garage roller tires and are 225/70, but none the less, pulled. I am thinking 245 min and most likely 255. 275 might be a stretch the other direction. I think I would have to use a spacer anyhow to clear the rear strut.
