So looking into the future, lets just say all the Alfa V6 Engines had gone (I know it will be a long time yet) what do people think would be a new source of power plant? As engine cc reduces and power increases, look at the new 1.4's giving out 185 stock (Audi A1) what would be tempting???

WOW, it would be hard to imagine a world without Alfa V6's. :-] I hadn't really given it much thought, but I would guess any modern FWD transverse engine setup would work, probably the best one has yet to be offered.

For me it needs to be a V6 - the sound is a huge part of the experience.

According to the man on the "How to build .... A Supercar" show, as much as 50% of the experience is the sound.

This doesn't invalidate the original point though. The new Alfas still have V6's, just not derivatives of the original one used in the kits. There are always options.

So what would you have jeff if like the original question states no ALFA V6

the original question states no ALFA V6

Well, the current V6 isn't the same as the Busso V6 we're all using version of .. and that's what I would have thought most of us on here would interpret as "The Alfa V6". The new one's a version of the GM engine with reworked (or new?) heads if I remember rightly.

If we rule that one out, I'd go for the Ford unit; Loads about, cheaper parts, lots of tweaks already sorted. For me this is what would keep the cars on the road for years to come. In a sense picking an engine like the Ford also ensures that (hopefully) the engine mounts would offer a greater range of other engine options too as it's used in common platform approach.

I did say on the old forum what about a Jag V6 cheap, plenty about, and if you go for the later models over 300bhp no problem, never found a gearbox to mate to it.
Sure there must be one out there some where.

Where are our Tech heads.....

The Jag one is "in line" (I would have thought so and so make the Jag RWD in keeping with its tradition) so would seem an awkward starting point for a transplant. Why not stick to FWD configurations that provide everything in the right shape to start with.

Well the X type was a 4wd system and the engine was at that time based on a Ford with Jag heads, knowing Ford they would have wanted to use that engine in several cars and Ford only made FWD for most of Europe, also its compact.

.....many years from now in a galaxy far far north and to the left a bit,..... John H's 15th engine installation is going to be a Hydrogen Fuel cell powering lithium chassis with wheel motors and regenerative braking ....and still getting ready for the new 2020 IVA test.....

I was thinking Ford ST 2.5 Turbo, 5 pot. Sounds like a Quattro, looks like a stratos, could be fun!! also I think the exhaust manifold is on the back of block so the installation of system would be easier.

How about 430BHP & 10,000 rpm+ of HARTLEY 3L V8 - Busa heads on a custom block and less than 200lbs.
Pic shows mated to a sequensial!
All out of my price range - Lottery win I think!978

That gearbox looks familiar..............................that's the Sadev ST90 -14, 6 Speed Sequential, got one of those in the workshop ready to be fitted to the Alfa V6 and dropped into the Stratos......:):):)

Really good looking engine though, the Alfa would never look that good................................

If not a Busso, it would have to be a 308/328. Authentic transmission, cheaper and more power than a Dino.
That doesn't really fit the 'something plentiful' bill though, does it? You really can pick up Mondials for £7k to £10k though.

There must be a transverse gearbox you can use with the Duratec/Jag V6? Didn't a Noble use one in that configuration, and the new mid engine Ginetta too?

This should go on your Jag V6, but don't take my word for it:

It's the MTX75. Transaxle version of the MT75. As fitted to the Mondeo?

Ever fancied a Skoda engine in your Stratos ?????

Well how about a 3.6ltr V6 297bhp lump out of a Skoda Superb, VW Touareg / Phaeton or Audi Q7
Lots of grunt but not cheap !!! I bet.

On a down to earth cost, VW Golf VR6 lump, also available in America.

As far as I know the v6 3.0 was always 4wd, and I have never heard of the one, with the smaller 2.0 litre (http://www.stratosec.com/wiki/Jaguar_AJ-V6_engine#AJ20) petrol V6 (http://www.stratosec.com/wiki/Jaguar_AJ-V6_engine) that it talks about!!
