Looks very tidy.
Anyone venturing out?
Was toying with the idea of going to Kielder.

It depends on the progress of number 17 John.
They've done the two opening Shelsley Walsh stages.

One observer from today:

"Best sound of the day on Epynt goes to the stratos, followed by the Tr7v8 and the nice Avenger ! Quite a few Escorts coughing and spluttering , great day , lots of cars without spotlamps when it was getting dark ?"

There are two video clips on Instagram from the the first couple of stages and it does sound sweet. A bit slippy on the way down though!
There was a post on Instagram a while back which said they have swapped to a 6 into 1 exhaust which I think helps enhance the sound as well.

The Stratos is early on this bit, shot to look like old cine film. I don't know why?:

Who has now reverted back to running the with the twin silencer Gp4 type exhaust rather than the 6 in to 1.
It sounded very sweet before.

I was at Shelsley Walsh for stage 1 and 2 yesterday. Can confirm 6 into 1 exhaust. What a noise!! Heres some photos.

I'm sure a Stratos replica could run in the open class on this event.

Like Mark's Zenith Lister Bell, for example.

That's a much bigger silencer than was shown in the Instagram post.

I used to get so bored with all the Ford Escorts, RS1600s, BDAs, Twin Cams, Mexicos, 1300 GTs etc, etc.
I remember being 1st non-Ford in my Simca, 7th overall in one night event!

I had a quick chat with Steve and his mechanics while they were changing tyres and fuelling up after the hill climb. They said this configuration with the big silencer kept it down to 98db for noise regs. It still sounded amazing though, it really howls!

I'd think it's purely down to power output? Theory has always been more power from a v6 with both banks of cylinders not being joined.

BUT.... That noise from the 6 into one is lovely.

It's interesting that one has gone one way for more power & the other has one the opposite direction. Two very different engines of course.

Do you think that is simply down to the extra rpm that this car runs or is it down to the mods to the engine & heads etc?

I would think it's all exhaust.
I think the works 1975 24v cars had just one very small transverse silencer per bank?

Seb Perez was quite a bit in front of the Stratos with just one camshaft and 8 valves, but seems to have had a problem on stage 11.

Bernard

Unfortunately Jerry Bailey has retired with a broken camshaft.......

Mr Milner is still going very well in this class...... Punching well above his cc weight!!!

'Needs a head gasket though and it's only half way.

'Sorry about Jerry.

Seb Perez had a mechanical, so is going to run on the clubman rally with a new engine (swapped Pinto for BDA).
All cars in front of the Stratos are Escorts and it's in 18th overall.
The Stratos has lost 2nd gear, but he's going to carry on because he wants people to see the car.

Seen Steve Perez come through Twiglees tonight at 18.50, the car sounded grate up in the woods at night as did the Escorts to. Also putting in a good show was the TR7

Steve Perez has finished the Roger Albert Clark rally in 18th O/A.
'Lost about 10 seconds in an early stage today, handing the non Escort lead to Jimmy McRae's V8 Firenza (13th O/A).
Marty McCormack won, from Matthew Robinson and Roger Chilman.
Yorkshire hero, 'Banner' was 6th with hardly a straight panel on the car.

Thanks to all of you who sent messages of support, it's just a pity that we lost the engine so early, we think a cam lobe broke, anyway the whole dry sump system was full of filings so we couldn't fix it even if we had the spares.

We did enjoy the second fastest time on the downhill run at Shelsley Walsh, that brought a few slaps on the back from the BDA boys.

Its such a shame that Adam Milner, with Prototipo's brother on the notes, fell off eventually. He was setting a fearsome pace on the stages and deserved a good result, I'd have been quite happy to have finished second in class to him!

I was a very well supported event both by competitors and spectators, we just need a few more stratos on it to keep Steve Perez company.

I hope you have better luck on the next event.

As earlier post CJ.... Adam and Roy were very impressive running in a place reserved for the BDG boys !!...... excellent for a 1600cc car

Do you know what sort of power it develops ?.... and who built it for him ?

As JB said ... he deserved a good result

Roy gets his engines built by Scholar.
I think it has about 165bhp, and is easily within the cc limit.

To clarify:

When it was new:
167bhp
1640cc
All steel, dry sumped, bespoke stainless Simpson Race Exhaust, 4 speed rocket, baby atlas rear Capri 3.0 drum brakes, twin pot front brakes.
