Can anyone help with a bit of history for the press ???
Help him maybe help the club ??

Cheers Mel

Good evening

I’m trying to finalise a report on the French Rallye d’Automne VHC 2017 for Classic Cars magazine. The report will contain a short feature on the Lancia Stratos HF owned and driven in that rally by Patrick Hautot. I believe this to be the car that was driven by Fabrizio Tabaton in the 1980 Sanremo Rally. However Patrick Hautot tells me that he knows nothing of the competition history of his car prior to him acquiring it. Thus it occurred to me that there may be those within your club who would know and, if so, they may also know more about this car’s competition history. If anyone can help me, I’d be most grateful to hear from them as soon as possible as I’m facing a tight copy deadline for this report.

With my thanks in anticipation.

Regards

Michael Davis

He would need to supply the registration number of the specific car

As said with Tim requested through Lancia Motor Club this Stratos with Grifone team livery has been entried in Tour Auto this year and in a recent rally in France...this car is registered as one 1974 Stratos...Not sure then it's the same car used by Fabrizio Tabaton in San Remo 1980!

As Phil says the registration number and the vin plate of this car must be compared with Tabaton car which could be 829ARO*001979* but to be confirmed!

What purchaser of a group 4 stratos does so without researching it's competition history? Or maybe it doesn't have a history as such if it's only recently been made?

Was thinking this son !....... one would expect a competition car particularly, to have a substantial history file !...... I would certainly want to know the exact history.... especially an ex crashaton..... sorry Tabaton car !

After some research I'm pretty sure this car is not the Tabaton one but more probably that one sold in auction few years ago in Germany
I remember now to have seen it in Retromobile Paris last year with a recent french Plate!!

I was contacted by Michael Davis as SEC Press Officer.... Tabaton is quoted in Stratos Mythe and Realite, as driving a Grifone Stratos to a number of Podiums in 1979 (finishing 2nd in San Marino Rally), 1980 and 1981. The crashed car does not look like a Grifone to my apprentice eyes. Was that crash in 1980??? I have forwarded on this information, and the difficulty of tracing cars to the the journalist who cannot get any more data on the car in question. He did ask who may have the data base of Stratos history and I mentioned Thomas Popper... If any of you have any information please PM me.

The crashed car is indeed a Grifone car. You can see a decal on the rear clam above the registration which, according to the competition history compiled by Thomas Popper in the back of Nigel Trows book, was GE 714317.
He started to use GE 714317 in 1979. Was that accident on the San Remo that year?
Tabaton later also used GE739328 in 1980, shared TON12661 with Perssuti and Pirro on the Giro in 1980 and competed on into 1982. In the later events he used TON14329, the same car which Alen used on the 1981 RAC starting at Chester but didn't finish due to an accident.

And to answer my own question, now I've looked more closely at the second photo Michel
attached in his first post you can clearly see "21st Rally San Remo" and car 16 which was definitely 1979.

Hadn't just taken the lead of the rally at the time?
I'm sure that would have been his best ever career result. If only....?

Just to confirm that the the crashed Tabaton silver 'SIAS' 'GRIFONE' 1979 San Remo rally car is:
Italian registration - GE 714317

According to Frederic that is chassis number 001979

The chassis number of the car in question is .................?

GE 739328
'Just as an aside to this:

The Tabaton OLIO FIAT 1980 San Remo Stratos was registered GE 739328
This was the actual car that carried the Rothmans colour scheme that Ken Tomblin's car is a replica of.
I'm sure Ken said it survives to this day with that OLIO FIAT colour scheme.
I can't find any recent photos of it, but here it is in period:

Exact Chris!
As you know Grifone was a semi-private team located in Genova and created by Luigi Tabaton (Fabrizio's father) and sponsored by Olio Fiat
They raced a few Stratos with engines prepared by University Motors
As said the first one was destroyed during San Remo in 1979 and the second one used by Fabrizio in italian championship in 80 and early 81
No information found about Chassis number of this one and no more trace in the next decades about this car...maybe it was on entry list in rally legend 2011 but no pictures found!
The Rothmans car seems to be a different car driven by Jorge De Bagration who had no link with Grifone team...

Thanks Frederic,
I thought the 'GE' must be Genova?
That is a different Rothmans colour scheme to the one that Ken Tomblin's Hawk is a replica of. It's the Mauro Pregliasco Targa car. (the Olio Fiat car in your photos)

Yes Chris, GE is for Genova at the difference of Lancia works cars with TO
Here the same car and registration with a white livery ...but it's a bit curious that there is no further information about this car which seems to have disappeared!!
Was the car destroyed in race too or re-used with another paint scheme and Plate???

One original group 4 with Grifone paint scheme has been seen in demonstration at Rally legend 2011...Is that one?
In Padova 2017 show recently another one was shot for Olio Fiat promotion...is this the same one?
The mystery remains intact!

That will be interesting Ken. It might answer some questions or raise more.
