View Full Version : Targa catch refurb kits
After much hassle I am in a position to offer some kits for sale.
The kit (all stainless) comprises
8 pins with groove machined at 30mm (fits mine perfectly although note the piece after the groove is slightly longer than the origina
8 e clips
8 wave washers
4 springs pre bent ( due to tolerances the final bend on the catch is not done as the spring is best centred on your catches and marked before bending as there are differences also dependant on whether the catch is powder coated or painted. Easily done holding in a pair of pliers and can be completed with finger pressure before final trim to length)
The peened over Centre pin is not included although I will be trying the aluminium ones suggested by Gordon Caro.
Cost is £26.50 inc post in UK. Please PM me directly if interested. All the best Neil

good work Neil - if I hadnt already done mine I would have bought a set !
Thanks Neil, I'm very grateful that you've put this together - I'm looking forward to rebuilding my very tired catches with your kit - for me it's one less area to research when I've got plenty of other challenges ...and I didn't just want to buy ready done ones either.

That goes for me too Neil.
Looking forward to using my kit soon.
Great effort putting this together.
If I could leave a five star review anywhere I would!!
Thanks for your support during the initial stages. Any queries on fitment of parts drop me a pm. Thanks again. Neil

I have put this full kit on the bay starting at £275 but in hindsight should have posted here first. If anyone is interested please pm for full details, happy to discuss price point but in reality I don’t think there is a lot of movement. I may also consider an exchange deal if that helps in anyway. I can remove lugs and repaint. I haven’t powder coated as some prefer all black, some chrome back plates etc but the finish certainly on the black levers is v good and the silver stands up to scrutiny.

Five star review from me, the spring, pin & clip kit is excellent, my old springs have just rusted away, this makes life much easier... a rare thing!!!
Tim.
I have now experimented with the ‘riveted’ centre pin and successfully completed a set using aluminium pins. (Caveat do not buy from Chinese suppliers but buy uk engineering stock if you want to do these yourself).
For those that have already bought one on my kits in UK happy to send a set of 4 FOC just PM your addresses again. New orders I need to add a nominal £2.50 if required. Attached is my method of achieving the desired result in a home workshop. I am sure others can refine the process.

I think CJ tried these. Aren't they something to do with bookbinding?
Neil has done all the work though. No point re-inventing the catch refurb kit!

The Chicago screws were ok to replace the odd missing pin.
That was then.
Now, Neil is making a thorough and OE spec fix.

I used Chicago screws on my refurbed set and they look and work just fine - although havent fitted them to the car yet but Neil's presentation offers a great alternative.
Only a Couple of sets left. Please PM if interested
All the best

Does anyone know the correct spec. for renewing the torsion springs on the X1/9 catches?
Thanks.
This kind of thing, but they come in different rates/sizes:

Don't know about torsion rates but when I made mine I used 1mm piano wire coiled to the same dimensions as the originals (7 coils, 10mm O/D, 8mm I/D). The load on the catch felt very similar once fitted
