Knew that they'd suffered a fire but didn't know Steve Perez was injured. Glad to hear he's on the road to recovery, hope it's a full one!

The basic story is that during refuelling there was a splash or a spillage of fuel that ignited on the hot exhaust. The Co driver managed escape where Steve bore the brunt of the ensuing fireball.
The car damage is largely cosmetic and Steve was the main concern.
As we can see from his post on FB the other night and the Lancia_Stratos post on Instagram he is now on the road to recovery which is excellent news for all concerned.

We all know Steve Perez and appreciate him as well
I had the pleasure to meet him in last Costa Brava rally...
All thoughts and best wishes for his recovery
Please any fellows and friends take care and be safe especially during rally...Old and classic cars are great but potentially more dangerous than more recent ones!

Fire it’s my main concern each time I refuel the car during race with hot engine and exhaust ...also I do it with rear hood closed to avoid splash or spillage on it!

Looks like spectators are going to see a lot of Ford Escorts....

Looking at our 20p 1973 RAC programme, they were 1st 2nd and 3rd.
The thing is, RWD Escorts have never become obsolete, and competition parts supply has been constant since they were first used. A Porsche 911 won the last Roger Albert Clark rally though.

The 1973 one John?
There were 241 entries. Over 4 hours for the rally to pass through with zero holdups, so probably a lot longer.
8 pages of entries in the programme.
No. 68 was driver Jill Robinson, co-driver Jimmy Savile.

Anyone you're looking for in particular?

Thanks Chris.
I seem to remember this was the first ever entry of a rotary engined car on the RAC.
I used to work for Tim at weekends and holidays at his narrowboat hire business while I was still at school!
There was always loads of car related stuff going on at Bartington Wharf, including restoration of a Connaught F1 car. Tim was responsible for my interest in both cars and canal boats and has therefore cost me a piggin' fortune throughout my life!!

Phil

Thanks
Steve

The significance of the final stage is that it's the longest one Steve, 38 miles of loose surface where tyres are scrabbling for grip and having chunks ripped off them by sharp gravel. The Stratos has an advantage over the Escorts here as there is more weight over the driven wheels creating better bite and, hopefully, less wear. But a puncture for any of the leaders is possible and could change the whole leaderboard.

What cruel cruel luck to have to retire 8 miles from the end of a grueling 4 day event. The Perez family and whole team must be gutted to have come so close to a record 2nd place after the full rebuild in 2018. Our hearts go out to them.

Bloody good effort! I am guessing robust transmission parts are not quite as easy to obtain/use as ford bits...
Cannot be easy choosing to run a Stratos so that morally makes it a win in my mind :)

I think the Escorts are 'newer' and had so much development on them over their life.

Should we do some sponsorship for the car next time?
It might only be small but it might be meaningful

Steve65
27-11-2023, 20:41
A nice thought however I suspect Mr Perez isn't short of a Bob or two given he was the main sponsor of the whole event. When you look at the plethora of Escort race and rally parts companies I think your comment about their development is much nearer the mark.

Guy Mayers
27-11-2023, 21:20
Hopefully this event's profile will have been raised significantly enough on the "Continent" to encourage a few more EU competitors to consider an entry for the next event? It would be nice to see a little more variety in the entry next time. Whilst I appreciate an Escort Mk1 or Mk2 the overload on this rally was almost too much. It would be nice to see a few Fiat 131's, Fiat 124 Abarth, Opel Asconas, Mantas, Minis etc etc. Maybe even a couple of more Stratos could be scared out of the woodwork?

Variety is the spice of life they say. After this years event I'm probably going to revisit Rally Legend in San Marino, Italy later next year. The attraction of that event is the variety of machinery for me!

You right Guy! Only one french driver this year with my friend Maxime Vilmot on Ford Escort retired early with a engine issue!
Hopefully there will be a few more EU drivers with differents cars than the Escort armada in 2025!;)

Just for the record The engine in the Stratos is as follows Steve's statement 22221

To put the record straight British Rally Media were incorrect stating it was an Alfa v6 .
Its a Lancia /24v engine based on the Ferrari Dino The photo on the right is a 12v both are homoligated.
Replicas generally use a V6 Alfa great engine and about ?100k cheaper!
We have to use the big silencers in UK to get the noise down, in rest of the world they go in the bin!

Thanks Sach - fascinating issue! I'm hope that the limited circulation within the club won't be an issue, if copyright is a problem it should be taken down but I'd hope that the publishers would see the reproduction of one copy might generate additional subscriptions for them. That issue contained fascinating articles on "continuation" Blower Bentleys and AC Cobras too. I've highlighted it to Gerry for that and the Dino motor article although I suspect that a 24v version will be beyond his pockets for his tin cars!

Great article, I read before that Lancia race dept in development of the Stratos the original Ferrari 166 Dino F2 24V heads could not be used do to the carburetors packaging, Lancia re cast them with different Inlet Tracts, interesting to read Swindon Racing Engines still had a compromise in that area.
