Hi,
I'm after the top spring retainer for the rear of my Hawk/Transformer.
I have some Leda struts but the top spring cap has a very large hole, I don't know if this was for the Hawk top mount but it does not suit my standard top mounts.

This is not mine but the set up looks the same.

Thanks Paul

Hi Paul,

It's a long time since I had some of these.
If I remember correctly the whole strut, springs and alloy spring seats were made especially for the Hawk (pre GAZ).
I think the top alloy seat sat on a shoulder? The springs were flat, top and bottom. 'Not as large a diameter as the standard Beta springs.
Dave at Dampertech might be able to help?: http://www.dampertech.co.uk/
Here's what mine looked like:

Hmmm. I had a pair of Leda struts but have gone over to Gaz now. I also converted from the Beta top mounts to the spherical joint ones but I can't recall for certain if the Beta type top mounts transferred over to the spherical top mounts. What makes think they were transferred is that I have just found the old bottom spring pans. I'll have another look at the weekend but I would have expected to find top & bottom mounts together if I had them.

But, if I do have them they'll have quite a wide hole through the centre as the top spring pans for Beta top mounts which are located by a hard plastic protrusion from the base of the Beta top mount. I suspect that's what you've got at the moment Paul? Is it possible to get a spacer machined from a hard polythene block to fill the hole?

Thanks for the info,
I have just taken a pic of the top ring, I'm probably just going to machine up a couple of new top rings if there are no spares around.

'Should look similar to this (Jeff's photo, and probably GAZ):

I've never seen one like that Paul! IF I've got a top mount it'll look more like the one in Chris's posting above. But the hole may be bigger, something like an inch? I'll try to have a look tomorrow night and let you know.

Here's an old poor quality photo of a Leda strut with Hawk spring pan and beta top mount.
They are aluminium discs about 5" diameter, 3/4" thick, tapered to the outside with a hole from memory of about 1cm diameter in the middle.
Second pic of it in situ, third a diagram of cross section of top end of strut

Well that's the garage upended and the only ones I found were the bottom spring pans so the assumption is that I either gave them away already or they're still on the car. Sorry, can't help this time Paul!

Ok,
Thanks for the help, looks like I need to spend a few lunch breaks on the lathe then, I'll post a few pics when i'm done.
