View Full Version : Headlamp lift motors - wiring query

I'm gradually working my way around the lighting wiring but am having trouble with the lift motors. These are Mk1 MR2 motors as far as I can recall and have the following 5 wires :

1) Black with brown bands - presumably an earth ?
2) Yellow - up movement ?
3) White/red ?
4) Red - down movement?
5) Green - ?

Anyone know what these wires do and how they should be linked to the LB loom ? (LB currently not responding to my query - I am guessing they are very busy)
Wiring is not my strong point and I've already blown a few fuses so if somebody already has it worked out that would be helpful.

Many thanks

P

Not at home at the mo but can take a pic for you tonight showing what's what.

I'm not at home either Peter but from memory
Black= earth
Red=power
Yellow and white= one is up, one is down.
Not done an LB loom so don't know what connects to what.
I'm not sure the above is correct but you can check them on the bench by connecting 12 v pos and neg to say red and black then apply 12v pos to yellow and white in turn. If it's correct the motor should turn 180' at each application of 12v to the yellow and white. If it doesn't do this just try different combinations. I don't think you can harm the motors by getting it wrong.

This is what I used:

Motor, loom

Black/Red - Earth
White/Red - Ign Live, connects to purple in loom
Red - Motor up, connects to orange or red in loom
Yellow - Down, connects to orange or red in loom
Green - not used

If the motor goes up. when it should go down just reverse the red and yellow motor wires

I would have uploaded the diagram but for some reason it's not letting m rinser images.

Yes. I think that's right Dave. I'd forgotten the power was white/red. I remembered it as red only.

I remember googling it at the time, they're MX5/Miata lift motors, I found quite a good video on youtube. https://youtu.be/EuQrtwljUKc

Here's the LB diagram I used. Green on the motor is not needed.

Many thanks to everyone for responding. Coincidentally I also got a response from Lydia which confirms Leigh's diagram - so thanks to all for a rapid response. I spent some time today trying to get the lift motors working but they are playing hard to get , plus I've only got main beam and no dip = so need to spend more time investigating. All fuses are intact so need to check the switch connections and relays. ( All the back lights are working ok)

Might be an idea to test the motors on the bench to establish that they work. Then you know it's a connection fault on the car if they fail to function when fitted.

Thanks John - I'll try that next. I suppose it's pretty obvious really - but like I said electrics are not my strong point!
