I am looking for a 17mm diameter lower steering column shaft - I have an 18mm one if that is any use to anyone

Paul,
If you can, it's worth doing something similar to how Vince Abbott changed his Hawk steering shaft.
It would need some very professional welding/fabrication though.
See Vince's photos below:
Also, have you got a cast UJ to go onto the pinion?
These take up more space than the OE Triumph Herald/Spitfire Flexi-joint, (and will impact whatever rubber boot arrangement you use) but will last a lot longer.
Cast (Triumph GT6/group 4 Escort etc.) joint photo also below:

Alternatively, here's the split bush I had on my first Hawk:
I had the centre bored, and a self lubricating bush fitted.
I also spaced the block off the bracket, after fitting the Triumph GT6 UJ.

Paul, did you mean one of these?

If so which bit are you measuring? The shaft diameter of this one is just over 15mm.

Thanks for the details Chris.

For now I have shortened a 15mm diameter X1/9 shaft and will fit the standard split block mount - I may fit a self lube bush to it too.

Just rethinking the column layout to make it easier to fit a spherical support bearing rather than the split block.

JJ990 yes thats the part - diameter is the central shaft - not sure I need another at the moment.
