Hello folks,

It's that time of year again so wanted to get an indication of what folk would expect to pay to insure a 1 year old LB worth around the ?125K mark and garaged overnight. (I'm assuming no no claims discount which can be factored in later).

Thanks for reading this.

Insurance is affected by so many different factors that whatever figure anyone volunteers on here, your actual quote could end up being wildly different. Call a few firms and see what they say - try Classic Line, Adrian Flux, MSM - you know, all the usual suspects, but be aware they might well ask for an independent valuation. Luckily for you, being in the club, you can drop me a line with some pics and details of your car and the club will email you a suitable document that should do the trick.
Even better, if you're going to the LMC gathering on the 21st in the car, I can have a look at it "for real" which is always better.

I have mine insured with Footman James on an agreed value policy of ?100k (from Norm - he was obviously being tight the day I asked ;))

My renewal this year was ?421 fully comp. Garaged at night.

It's conditional on these things, all of which are different for one driver/ car to another:

1) location
2) age of driver
3) experience of driver

They're the key ones. Others like spec, expected mileage etc affect it but these are the factors that'll differentiate the price most.

Cheers,
Hedge

I do hope to get to the LMC, will confirm once my schedule?s set. BTW, I went with the ?125K ballpark number in light of older lower spec cars for sale recently.

Having recently gone through the 'dance' of getting insurance for my son when he passed his test last month I can only conclude that the quotes are generated by a random number generator.

Each time I ran a quote it just got more expensive.

He has the same car as his mate (Fiesta) only 18 months older but same car, same age as his mate, same driving experience, live in the same village. My son's insurance is almost ?1k more expensive than his mate's. The company his mate is with wanted over ?3k to insure our son, where he got his for ?1500. Cheapest we could find was ?2.4k with a different company.

Madness. And the costs are just insane for youngsters. If it wasn't for bank of mum and dad there is no way he'd be able to afford it.

Agree with what Leigh is saying, massive difference with the insurance companies, living in Northern Ireland insurance is always a higher premium ?548 with a 2k mileage cap. That was the cheapest from Footman James, Adrian Flux said they couldn't come near it and a couple of companies would not insure hear

What a lot of people don't realise is the number of days before renewal is another significant factor. The sweet spot is to obtain quotes 20-23 days before. We always put a reminder in the diary for our cars and home insurance.

I have seen this pointed out before. You have to ask why? How can the risks be affected by when you ask for the quote?

My STR insurance renewal came in today from Footman James and was up ?60 on last year.

The bit about getting quotes and fixing them early is real. We ordered a new Defender for 1st July and got indicative quotes a few weeks in advance based on an identical spec but before we knew the proper registration number. Ten days later when the reg number was confirmed the quote was up nearly ?100. I called the broker to confirm that everything was exactly as the before but he said most companies increase the premium the closer you get to the start date. I?d probably ever realised as it was the first time I?ve been organized enough to check in advance.

The algorithm factors in how desperate you are if it's very near or the day prior to renewal or to put it another way it is believed that an organised driver that is more in control of circumstances and plans well ahead is considered a lower risk. I'm not necessarily convinced of a connection but all I know is it certainly pays to get quotes early.

My STR insurance renewal came in today from Footman James and was up 60 quid on last year.

So, today I planned to phone around a few places to see if I could beat my FJ renewal which came in at ?410 for 3000 miles p/a and 135k agreed value.

The guy at Classic Line insurance stopped me in my tracks after a few mins saying they would be a minimum of ?1100 and more likely closer to ?1500 and that was before we clarified what he meant by, "is it modified"

My previous experience with Adrian Flux is that life is too short to go through the process so I skipped them.

FJ didn't offer any wiggle room for negotiation although I could save the ?60 by reducing the annual mileage from 3k to 2k. Given that I've just managed 2k miles in 3 years that might be sensible but I'm gong to be a devil and just go with the flow.

Guys, I have it on very good authority that Jim (Renmure) lives in one of the most desirable postcode areas as far as vehicle insurance quotes go, so the majority of us are unlikely to see prices anywhere near what he is able to achieved. His figure is less than mine was last year on a lower valuation, and due for renewal shortly..!!!

To reinforce my comments regarding the place of Jim's abode, I have received my Insurance Renewal quote from FJ today and it has gone up twice as much as Jims'.

Honestly Robin, I live at the poor end of the street. There are 16 houses, 2 Euromillions winners, one UK Lotto winner, a few rich folk and then me and Wendy as the equivalent of The Clampetts. I think the insurance premiums of everyone in the neighborhood went up when we moved in and the sales of Ring Doorbells and CCTV systems went through the roof.

Something I also just discovered this weekend about insurance...

I've been window shopping for a reasonably expensive sporty car and was using the online places to get indicative insurance quotes before deciding. I'd put the voluntary excess value at 500 (I usually just tick the box for 250 but thought I'd better go higher for this) and the lowest of the quotes I was getting were over 4k and some over 6k!! Until I sold it a couple of weeks ago I was paying around 350 for a Ferrari 360 Spider so was a bit gobsmacked and disappointed.

After a bit of googling I went back and changed the excess to 1k and low and behold, the quotes were all just under 500. Phew, happy days. I'd no idea that changing the excess played such a big part in the quote. Lesson learned.

As I see it, the only sensible thing to do in that case is use the car 38% more ;)

Just shows what amazing value the club subs are, though. I've been a member since 2016 and chairman for 5 years, and it's not gone up at all in that time....even though I'm probably at least 38% bigger than I was :)

@normb666 - just in the process of getting quotes one of the questions is whether I am a member of any club - does this forum count and is there a membership number with the subscription?

Normb666
16-10-2024, 18:15
Yep, we're an actual club, hence the name - we're even recognised by Stellantis Heritage. We don't issue membership cards and the like and so there's no membership number. Tell the insurance company you're a member and if they want a valuation or anything, come back to me.
To be clear, you're a club member and the forum is our online presence.....although we've also got a Facebook page as well.

Well, another year on and another insurance hunt.

For an assortment of unrelated reasons I?ve done less than 50 miles over the past year so Footman James got a good deal for my 410 quid last year. They want an extra 10 quid this year for identical cover on an agreed value basis which probably is not too bad but I thought I would quickly give Adrian Flux a call in case I was missing out. Given they wanted 1500 pounds I think I?ll stick with FJ.

My FJ policy was due to expire in 5 days. As above, I intended to renew but it went out of my mind. They phoned today to see if I was renewing and the most gentle of haggling brought the price down by 10% to ?380 for identical cover. Happy days

08-08-2025, 18:30
I?m maybe better at little white lies when saying I had a more competitive quote but wanted to stay with them. They offered 10% deduction if I dropped the annual mileage from 3k to 2k and I suggested I?d agree to that premium but sticking to 3k miles. That?s where we?ve ended up. Saying that, I?ve only done 2k miles in 4 years and 50 miles last year so dunno why I?m bothered about the annual limits!

My recent experiences !!!

Like Jim, my FJ policy is up for renewal now, and as their quote had increased on last year by ?50 to ?661, decided to ask a few other suppliers. First up, Lancaster, who rang me fortunately after a short on line request, and after a short introductory conversation, I said before we waste each others time, do you have an upper age limit? And after a hold of some 5 mins or so the answer was positive and they would not consider me. (Age discrimination, not the car, me)

So then to Classic Line, again a personal call fortunately shortened due to them having most of my details on file as we have another car with them, but I think they did not want my custom as they came back with ?1325 !!!! (Must ask questions when the other car become s due)

I at this point decided that life and time were more precious to me than being on the phone, so decided to go with FJ as I suspected I was going to hit the price and disco problem wherever. We unfortunately live in a high category region for insurance cover, unlike Jim who I understand is in one of the most amenable and lowest. We see on the local region?s Facebook that cars of substance are stolen at least 3 times a week!!! and there are probably more.

And finally Jim, I shall have just managed to keep under the 3000m limit by the end of the year.

Robin.

I think I may have shared this fact before or maybe not. The trick with all insurance quotes is to get them at between 19-23 days before renewal date, the sweet spot being 21 days for most companies.

Normb666
09-08-2025, 16:57
Cars are stolen 3 times a week?? I'd be really pissed if my car was stolen once, never mind 3 times....mind you, the local Plod must be on the ball if they can manage to get your stolen motor back to you in time for it to be nicked again just a few days later. :) :)

renmure
10-08-2025, 00:24
Robin, it seems like you are at least getting value for your insurance premium ;)

It does seem a risky business. Of my ?380 premium 40 of it is insurance tax and another 40 is the fee FJ charge as brokers. The underwriter, Zurich, is therefore getting ?300 for the pleasure of covering me for ?130k agreed value for a year plus covering unlimited 3rd party damage I may cause in a fault accident plus the risk of someone nicking the car. That works out about a fiver per week or 80p per day. Having once put a 40k dent in a car that?s a lot of fivers!! I should feel guilty about haggling but sometimes the Scottish bit comes through :(

Just had my renewal notice from Classicline for "laid up" cover....?487 for a value of ?80k.

Seems high to me.....just wondering what other people's experience is, either with Classicline or others, regarding laid up cover?

PS we have a north Oxfordshire postcode but we are on the border with West Northamptonshire who are our council
