Useful Rivnut Tool

I bought a Rivnut tool a few years ago but it doesn't do M8 ones, I was going to buy another but it seemed daft to spend a fortune on a decent one just to set one (or two) into the chassis. I've been fortunate enough to be able to borrow one in the past but it wasn't possible this time so I ended up one of these:

Ordered on Sunday evening it arrived today and worked exactly as described. I haven't looked into possible modification to do smaller rivnuts but if the head is large enough to be caught by the serrated edge then a simple sleeve to guide the bolt ought to work nicely.

I've used my own home approach, which is similar. I used a nut with washers / spanner instead of that tool for all rivnut which are difficult to install using the normal tool :-)

Does that work for steel and stainless ones as well as ali?

Worked for all sizes and types for me.

I had one of the Memfast ones which is basically a glorified version of what you have shown there, it just has an integral spanner. It failed very quickly because during the tightening process the rivnut is trying to turn & the only thing preventing it is the serrations, these lose their bite very quickly when used with steel rivnuts which renders the tool useless.
I found that a strip of 3mm steel with a nut & bolt works the best, use a spanner on the nut to tighten it, another on the bolt head to hold it in position with the strip of steel. Once the bolt is worn you simply replace it with a new one, cheap as chips.

Ive had a Spiralux rivnut tool for donkeys years, its bent a bit, been straightened and still works fine. Came with an M8 mandrel also. Recommended.

Powerful do another tool which sets M4, M5 and M6 rivnuts.
