Re: Another Stratos project
Unfortunately the car got a big issue during road testing with fluid leak from gearbox mixed with oil engine after less 50 mileage after full restoration! The engine and gearbox will be removed and checked soon in hope there is no big damage:(
Did anyone experencied same issue with an alfa engine or have an idea of the trouble?
Re: Another Stratos project
Oh no!! Blue oil is interesting...never seen that before but I understand it's a thing these days in some locations.
Were there any symptoms? Noises? Change in engine performance/sound??
Re: Another Stratos project
Blue fluid is oil for gearbox and transmission from Igol or Elf used in racing.
It’s happened during normal driving and shifting with small noise and big smoke in the rear. The car was stopped and towed after this issue. We didn’t restart it to avoid more damage!

Re: Another Stratos project
That's not good to see.
Guess the smoke is from where the oil went onto the exhaust.
Cannot see how you would get engine oil and gearbox oil together on these, but definitely some sort of leak from your (blue) gearbox oil :(
Hope you get it sorted quickly enough
Re: Another Stratos project
Was the gearbox fitted with a standard Alfa differential or does it have a Quaife or Q2 differential fitted?
Most of the blue oil looks to be coming from the join between the 2 parts of the gearbox casing and on its own is an easy fix.
A noise is more worrying as it suggests something else has gone wrong internally.

What is this a picture of? This looks like a crack?

Re: Another Stratos project
@John R I think so the smoke is coming from oil burnt on exhaust
@Craig the alfa 6 speed gearbox was fitted with a quaife diff and I suspect this oil is coming from there the noise is maybe when one gasket was broken
@Leigh fortunately it’s look like a crack but it’s only a thin oil leak on the edge of the cast!
Anyway the diagnosis will be done when the gearbox will be removed and opened! Fingers crossed…

Ah! That's good - sort of
As you say the smoke will be oil. You only need a small amount to produce lots of smoke.
Re: Another Stratos project
Stupid question... the gearbox/diff is not overfilled is it? Speaking from just having had similar symptoms, my guess is sometimes the angle the engine/box sits in our cars maybe slightly different to say a 156 chassis, thus making dip stick readings slightly out... enough for a Muppet like me to slightly overfill, forcing gearbox oil to come out of all sorts of interesting places!

That's a good shout Tim. A 166 dipdtick is marked differently to a 156 dipstick, a GTV and GT are probably different as well.
We tend to fill to the capacity stated in the Alfa manual and then re-mark the dip stick to suit that correct capacity.
If the box has blown between the two casings there is no gasket there only sealant on a machined face to machined face.
The end casing of the end casing of the box is removable in situ without the need to pull the rest of the engine etc.
It is also possible to remove the whole of the gearbox through the side of the engine bay without having to drain and remove the engine as well if needs must.
A bigger concern was that the Alfa diff had let go and punched a hole in the castings but if it has been replaced by a Quaife then that should not be possible.
