2 spotted on the A14 today.
About 3:30pm, spotted by a fellow Lotus driver and posted on my build thread on one of the Lotus forums I frequent.
Anyone recognise the cars?

John Whalley and Griff - I think I read somewhere else that they're headed to an event in Norway.

Impressive trailer. Is a Disco rated for towing that weight?
Re: 2 spotted on the A14 today.
It would need a tachograph. Unless there was absolutely no commercial aspect to the journey. Or that was the case four years ago when I did my driver qualification card. But it's a nightmare to understand.

Disco can pull 3500kg so should be within it's limit comfortably, assuming under 1000kg per car plus approx 1000kg for the trailer.
As John says it should probably have a tachograph fitted as it is being used to transport somebody else's car which would make it look like commercial use.
I'm sure Griff will be able to clarify the legalities

Re: 2 spotted on the A14 today.
Mr Whalleys 'new' social domestic & pleasure machine, no commercial connotation unless you include the cost of Mr Whalleys' sausage sarny. So no tacho requirement
Both cars comfortably under 1000kg, Disco rated for 3500kg, trailer is a bit trick, and it tows beautifully. It took a little while (trial and error) to get the balance correctly worked out.

The Altmark Incident (Norwegian: Altmark-affæren; German: Altmark-Zwischenfall) was a naval incident of World War II between British destroyers and the German tanker Altmark, which happened on 16–17 February 1940. It took place in what were, at that time, neutral Norwegian waters. On board the Altmark there were some 300[3] allied prisoners (officially internees), whose ships were sunk by the pocket battleship Graf Spee in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. British naval forces cornered the tanker and later the destroyer Cossack attacked the German ship near the Jøssingfjord and freed all the prisoners, killing eight German seamen and wounding ten others in hand to hand combat, five of them seriously. This was the last recorded occasion in which the Royal Navy used cutlasses whilst boarding a ship, and the subsequent hand to hand combat. A British and a Norwegian sailor were also seriously wounded in the action. Germany claimed that the attack was a grave violation of international law and of Norwegian neutrality.

Spent the first night with Rene, getting the spares & tools split up ready for the off.
Does this count as the greatest mileage garage day?
Re: 2 spotted on the A14 today.
I'd say so Griff.
To get one further away we would have to visit the Antipodean contingent. Or our friends in the States.

Looking back down the highest road in Europe (2,000m+) from which you can see the sea, back to the little village where the cruise liners come in, all the passengers then being taken up the road for the views. Having driven from Leknes over Norangsdalen to Hellesylt, we got the worlds most expensive car ferry to Geiranger and stayed the night in a very nice holiday cabin. Following morning we left at 7:00am and drove the Trolls ladder to Dalsnibba (twice - absolutely EPIC). Back through Geiranger and over Eidsdalen (Eagles road) to Eidsdal for the first ferry of the day.

top of the mountain, Gaustabanen is a funicular deep inside the mountain Gaustatoppen. Started by the Germans during WW2 and unfinished in 1945, it was subsequently taken over by NATO.
As the Cold War threat from Russia receded, it opened to the public for the first time for testing in 2004, these tests lasted until 2007, during which time it was only open for a few days each year.
In 2008 the Norwegian government finally signed an agreement with the NATO/Norwegian Armed Forces, and Gaustabanen opened for as a tourist operation in 2010.
The views are breath taking, as is the cold, at nearly 6000ft altitude!!

Re: 2 spotted on the A14 today.
Been following this on Instagram, looks like a brilliant trip!
Re: 2 spotted on the A14 today.
There's more to come on Instagram as well, just need to get the photographer/drone pilot back from various foreign trips/weddings, etc
Re: 2 spotted on the A14 today.
Is it only jj_rallies feed on instagram or are there more somewhere else? What I've seen so far are fantastic.

JJ_rallies is John Whalley (junior) hence the JJ, he is away at various weddings/holidays/family gatherings currently. There is loads more to come, particularly some of the drone footage (hopefully)when he gets back.
It was quite difficult reviewing it each day on a Mac screen, whilst in a holiday cabin, clearly some editing is required, but the final footage should give an indication of how good it was.
The big vertical hairpin in the map below is actually a tunnel over a kilometre in length, with a gradient of about 7%. Fortunately John (senior) had all the lights on as he approached at a rate of knots, and suddenly appreciated the severity
of the hairpin and was able to (just) negotiate it!!;)

One of the most surprising things on the trip, was the presence of two roundabouts inside a mountain tunnel system, and a huge suspension bridge (The Hardanger bridge) linking two under mountain tunnel systems. Quite spectacular to drive through and over.
We were so gobsmacked by the first roundabout, we went round it twice, just to get a proper look!!!
