Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Well you sure can't complain at those prices....why would you bother trying to find a knackered X1/9 when you can get these?? Good find!
-
Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Great prices Guy as long as there is not a silly carriage charge.
-
Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Might it be worth the club buying a set to evaluate the quality against originals? We could then buy multiple sets for future builders/club members if a discount or free shipping was available?
Guy

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
They look like the ones I bought a couple of years ago - in which case the quality is good and mine work very well ! (I also have some old X19 ones to compare against and they are directly comparable) - so look kosher !
-
Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
.... I wonder if he can remanufacture the targa catches too?
That would be brilliant.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
I have just bought some stuff from this ebay vendor for Lancia Fulvia and he is ok to deal with from my experience. All repro. quality is good to OK but it was cheaper than most. Speaks/writes English too and ships promptly - from Torino!

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Dunno if I'm doing summat wrong but when I go to check out the seller stipulates he doesn't ship to the UK.
Cheers,
Hedge

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Send him a question asking for a shipping price. That should sort it out for you.

Yep, done just that already....

He does do lower prices for multiple orders.
The quality is very good. I compared these repro outer door handles with a brand new original Fiat handle that I have.
They difference between them was minimal.

Hi Chris, can you recall if these handles lever out as per the originals as the set I got from Bielstein, although very good quality, don't have this function (i.e. they are fixed with only square section where key goes pushes in to open)?
Thanks in advance.

I think these are as per the American market originals for the X1/9 etc., but no doubt Chris will confirm this. I finished up with a set from Bielstein after I rejected the set of originals that I had acquired as not being good enough to use. They operate in the same manner as the originals.

Hi Ade,
Yes, the outer handles I bought from this seller had the normal function.
I've heard about the other type but have never seen any.
I think John Butts got some at one time?

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
I have just ordered a set as my passenger side one is a bit worn. Contacted last night re postage to UK and got a response this morning.
I’ll update once I receive them

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
I've got Bielstein handles on my car - they are a good quality OEM match.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
It's a while ago now but I think my set of "reproduction" door handles were the type where the pivoting bit of the handle didn't pivot, you had to manually push the square bit. If I remember correctly there was an extra "lump" on the plastic case that prevented the handle from pivoting. I removed the extra plastic lumps as I wanted the handles to work using the pivot mechanism.
Thought I'd discussed it on the forum but can't find the post.
Cheers, Graham

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Ordered on the 6th and just arrived so that’s very good service. The set cost under £200 including post an the new import duty. (The seller netted the duty off the purchase and post price which came out at £162) Duty charged by DHL @c£37.
Quality looks very good and the mechanism feels robust.
Graham you are correct they operate as push button with the lever having a lug stopping it operating which needs a cut with a dremal disc I suspect as the handle has the metal pivot pin installed and the square lock section has the shoulder on the back for the lever to actuate against. As my driver side is brand new I will try modifying the one I’ve just received and let you all know. Hopefully makes sense. The twin bonnet release operates as normal. In summary all I reckon these are a bargain but need to fit before final comment.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Interesting ! - I bought the chrome finish handles and they didnt have this plastic lug - even though they use the plastic shells - however I think mine were about £240 quid all in.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Neil, you've got a good deal there. Mine were £228.32 back in Feb 2019 from Bielstein and look identical in black with same tabs holding the latch.

I'll be very interested to see how your dremmeling turns out!
Cheers!

Ade
To be honest in some weird way I think I’ve benefitted from the brexit confusion on tax & duty which has created the reduced price.
I’ll let you know how the dremmel turns out.
Take Care

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
I got some chrome handles from the same supplier, and they operated in the normal way (no mod. needed)

You must have posted that at the same time as I did Peter?
Yes, the chrome ones worked in the normal way, and the price per set of three, was £150 each inc. post. (pre Brexit and for more than one set order)

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
The only difference I've noticed between the OE and repro handles is the shape of the 'ball' rod connecting post on the back of the handle.
The OE one is cone shaped, the repro one isn't.
But that's it, the quality of the repro handles is very good, as Neil says.
I compared the repro handles to a brand new FIAT OE handle that I have, and if there was any difference in quality, it was difficult to see.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Hi Guy,
A happy new year to you and your family.
Thanks for the link and the quality verification of the parts being sold by this vendor. I am also trying to buy a set of column stalks, but it appears that the seller does not ship t my address. I have sent them a message as well for a shipping quote.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
It's pretty obvious that someone in Italy has tooled up to make these door handles and bonnet catch mechanisms.... I wonder if it's worth asking is his supplier had considered remaking the over centre catches as well? I guess there's quite a market for them here, even owners of existing cars might be interested?

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
And indeed X19 owners Guy. See them advertised for restoration these days rather than breaking.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
I undertook the conversion to allow the operation as per original spec. The small lug on the handle removed quite easily with a dremmel wheel. ( I used a part worn one with reduced diameter to fit between lug and pivot pins) Graham was correct as there is a shoulder of plastic towards the corner of the body below the lug that still prevents operation of the arm. I drilled a couple of 5mm holes and needle file to remove. Once I had got my head around what was needed it was very simple. The hole is just visible when opening and I’m going to pop a bit of black sealant in there or similar. Not visible when closed.
Just had the import invoice (20% vat + 2.5% import duty) The total price came our at £205 in the end. Having modified and installed the nearside I can confirm the build quality is excellent. In reality I’m not sure I would bother altering if I was starting from scratch as visually they look great and the button operation alone worked fine. Individual preference I guess.
Given that my offside and clam release are brand new if anyone is interested in buying these off me drop me a pm. They have keys but each is different so no benefit in me swapping out.

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Neil. Thanks for the update on your handle mod. I think on your advice I will see if I can live with them (when I get to that stage) unmodified before messing around with them.
I needed to do some repairs on the X19 steering column shrouds and used this which worked well.

Ah, yeah, Milliput. Friend of mine called Gulliver brought me some back from his travels. It was a bit small though.

No Norm - Griff was defoe-nately right with his Swift response !! One- up for the little people of Brobdingnag ?

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
I stripped my door handles down and ground the plastic lug away from the inside. It never occurred to me to attack it from the outside - lateral thinking at work !

Re: X1/9 NEW Door Handle sets
Pete - and any other members who might think I'm some sort of literary philistine - yes, I know Jonathan Swift wrote Gulliver's Wotsits, but I'd moved on to puns around classical authors (as in, "own downfall"). And to prove it, I also know that Great Expectations was written by someone waiting for their kit. So there. :)
