Stratos for Sale - NEC
Just popped up on eBay, in light of the RetroPower offering i thought this one was a tad overpriced at ?280k
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/305829439...9427&recoPos=1
Listing says right hand drive, first registration 2021 so initial though was replica.
But a closer look shows LHD and a proper sill line with an engine size of 2419 so it's probably an original. Any sort of history and the price looks cheap!

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
'Same photo Guy.
The title is different though. 1975 on one, and 2001 on the other, and described as "white".???
The NEC auction listing is a guide of 280,000 to 330,000 pounds.
By the way, we've still got question marks instead of pounds signs on this forum. Hey ho.

Apologies for the duplicated thread! When I clicked on the other one it didn't bring up any pictures on the Mac Book... That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

We have discussed the car before:
Obviously a mountain of work done since then, and now perfect for historic rallying.

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
I've skimmed through the previous thread and have to own up to being a little confused......
Phil Hotham (is he still the owner?) said "....My Stratos is a genuine stratos It was built by Marchesi in Italy for me on the original Jigs and tooling and the fiberglass parts where also produced in Italy.....I also have a Nova and heritage dating certificate documents so it can be registered onto a V5c log book.....With a stratos chassis number on the documents which is 1974"
So if it was built for him, rather than bought as a complete car from Lancia, can it really be a "genuine" car and considered as an original? I don't know whether it has appropriate "matching" engine and chassis numbers?
Also, for those with more than my limited knowledge on such matters, what is the considered opinion on value?
Guide price is ?280-330k which seems pretty good value (particularly if it really is a genuine/original) when replicas have been selling for more than ?100k....

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
You're not the only one confused Gerry. Me too.
And short of a full explanation I'd guess a fair few more people.
My view is if it didn't come off the Bertone production line in 1974 with a build record as in the Trow book example, then it isn't an original Stratos.

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
Hammer price:
265k pounds
298,125 pounds inc. fees etc.
-
Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
I'd suggest the hammer price means buyers were not totally convinced of the cars 1970's pedigree either?
I'm not saying it wasn't worth the money, but it must have cost that to put together?
More money to be made putting a nice replica together?

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
I think this car's potential for historic rallying is the main thing.

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
Someone got a fair buy I would say, date wise I thought the same about my build, Hawk build etc is 2015, my IVA 2023, donor engine, box etc year 2000, instruments, stalks, steering column etc circa 1977 =/- , average age about 1996!!! ...
Phil H's old car can now be used in anger without the fear of bending one of Waldegards or Munari's old steeds (or the likes) & you know where to get it re-jigged if you ever need too

I'm certainly no expert but seems to me like a decent amount of car for the money......

In the same sort of value/significance area as a Jolly Club car.

Built after production, but from original parts.
Just in case anyone doesn't know what a Jolly Club car is:
-
Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
We discussed that particular Jolly Club built car at the time (2017) and it made good money at auction, compared to what factory built Stradales were selling for at that time.

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
Thanks for posting this Chris.
I'm wondering what has happened to it to drive the price tag up from c. ?300k, when it was purchased last November, to the asking price of ?370k?
From what I can glean from the advert the only change is the FIA Historic passport? Unless the pictures show something? I'm no Stratos expert so I could easily have missed something.
Strikes me it's a bit odd at a time when, supposedly, classic car prices are heading in the opposite direction......

Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
Hi Gerry,
It's a lovely thing and eligible for all sorts of events.
I suppose asking prices are not always selling prices?
-
Re: Stratos for Sale - NEC
You're right Chris
It'll be interesting to see if it sells and for how much (though I guess we may never know) given it was on the market for quite a while prior to the auction, if I recall correctly
