It's not generally known that various elements of all these cars eventually came together in the Lancia Stratos. Gandini was an avid Michelotti fan, and greatly admired his work with Triumph. In fact, a prototype was created using the motor from a Spitfire 1500 mounted over a transverse Mini/1100 gearbox, but BL were unwilling to supply units for the production car, and so Lancia were forced to use the Dino V6 instead. Just imagine what could have been....

Was that before or after the diesel 2CV engined Stratos prototype that Gian Paolo Dallara was developing?

Yes Chris, but after they'd scrapped the front wheel drive version using the Alfa 1.7 boxer installation. Thought were a sodding big fuel tank in the back for long distance endurance events....
