In snow and ice you would use the narrowest tyre permitted with studs.................................... some of the Grp4 cars with wide arches used to look stupid with snow tyres on....... there are photo's of Darniche on the Monte going over the Col's

Looks like Pirelli no longer makes them, but Michelin does.

I have had the pleasure of trying these extreem rally wintertires on a frosen lake, and it can best be described as moist / wet asfalt but more predictable.
Flick it in the scandinavian way and then adjust with the throttle.....
Amazing how much fun a tuned up SAAB 2 liter turbo engine and some steel tubing can be
