If I were looking to have a car built to spec, and didn't have a builder in mind that I knew and trusted, I'd have the work done in the UK (both Hawk and Listerbell offer build services) - at least up to the point at which it's still considered a kit (ie without engine, etc) so no issues with importation and subsequent registration. My concern would be the level of specialist expertize required, especially with the Hawk which uses more old/harder to source parts than Listerbell, you may end up with a less than optimal result. If building in the UK, plenty of members here can point you in the right direction.

That's right - Fran's the owner of Racecarreplicas that bosmass refers to above (GT40 and other replicas). Not sure if he made it over to this forum though. For a while he was owner of the Corse kit that Corky's now building.
Also, when Steve Ramm (California) was selling his unbuilt Hawk kit (no idea if it's sold or not) - he was offering a comprehensive build service as an option to any prospective buyer.

Looks like having Talon build the Hawk kit in the UK ( with engine shipped separately ) might be the way to go. Is there anything else that can't go in the car for it to come in as a kit car?

Something to consider having a kit built outside the US... It might be difficult bringing through customs. A completed car more than likely needs compliance to Federal standards before it can be released. A possible work-a-round is to have it built as a roller without engine and transmission, and other major components. This final build you would do yourself once you had it in your possesion. Feds can make life very difficult and expensive.
Don't import a car naively, it could end up in a crusher with a government agent smiling wickedly and smiling.

Careful with that suggestion. If it is run on the street with improper documentation, the car can be impuonded. Also Federal Paperwork must be filed at the time of importation for such purposes. Racing and Display cars can be driven on the street, but only near the events it is to be run in. If the car is to be used for normal street driving and discovered it is for Race or Display, then kiss the car goodbye and a hefty fine and potential jail time..... too risky for me. I looked into it a while ago when I was thinking about purchasing a 037. A "partial" kit may be easier to get through customs here, but in the long run there can be issues and have heard / read of Federal followups on cars brought in under this way. If one really is going to use it for race or display only, it's not an issue, but if one want to give it legal registration in their home state for street use, then there would be conflicting documentation that WOULD raise red flags and the Feds come a knocking on the door.
