    Re: Time to come clean

    Hi Nick,
I did a compression test before I did anything to the engine. Found that 2 cylinders were a bit low (one on each bank) so decided to remove heads. It was clear that head gasket was leaking on the 2 suspect cylinders so had the heads skimmed and re seated the valves etc. New water pump with metal impeller (that's a no brainer) and then new cam belt, tensioner and idlers. Cam timing was much easier than I expected, especially with the cam setting blocks. Back together now all rotating and seems fine ready for installation in the near future.
Oh and of course a new GTA clutch too.
When I get into the build properly, you're welcome to come up and have a look. I'll post updates in the Lister Bell section at various stages.
    Cheers,
    Mick

Thanks for the offer, I'll certainly be over to take a look once you start... Think I'll be doing similar with my engine, problem is knowing how far to go and when to say stop!!
    Cheers Nick

    Re: Time to come clean

If you drove the car the engine came from for a decent few miles & it was OK, and a compression test was ok, then you could just change the belts, water pump and Plugs etc.
If you are going to go as far as head gaskets, then you may as well go for a full rebuild, with new bearings gaskets, rings skimmed head honed liners, ground valves etc...
or as an intermediate just do the heads....

Myself I would always do the full rebuild unless its a very low milage engine.....

Hi Mick, Pleased to see you are hard at work on number 3.
I've not been on here for bl**dy ages and have missed out on a lot.

I have been up to see Craig at LB a couple of times this month and have spotted some yellow body panels almost ready for delivery to you.

Take care and i hope to see you soon.

    Cheers
    Tim
