Try this one Phil !
Depending on how much fuel was in the tanks (less than 1/3 ?) and the way your plumbed in. Is it possible you used all the fuel out of one tank resulting in low pressure & cutting out. While waiting enough fuel from the other tank filtered across to allow you to get home. Next morning both tanks now equalized, so a good thrashing would not repeat the fault.

both Sando and I thought the same.... So today have re routed the breather after blowing it through where there seemed to be a slight blockage !!..... Thanks for your input Dr
