As John says, quite a dense grain.
The captive thread is steel, I'll check the thread on the stick I have. The original stick is quite substantial, hence the 20mm ID on the knob.
The colour of the wood changes a lot where the clear coating wears through (see photos of Beta S1 knob).
I have just removed the gearknob from the car, it is the Beta S1 type. I believe the thread to be M10 x 1 (fine thread)
It has metal thread insert for wood as shown below.

I forgot to add the thread insert is recessed well into the gearknob by a good 1.5” to 2”

The 74mm is the length of the flat part on the side, but it's on a slant, don't pay much attention to that.
The vertical measurement from the bottom to the edge of the radius at the top is actually 85mm - 9mm = 76mm.
The overall height is 85mm.
I could make a proper engineering drawing on the computer?
The drawing on the left of the above is the actual shape and proportion.
