Browsing the "old road rallying photographs" page on Facebook I came across this Motoring News rally report from 1983. Those with an eagle eye might spot myself and buddy of forty odd years Dave George listed in the results at 28th position.
Brought back memories this as we had a great night on Anglesey. The Palferman was always a special event put on by Caernarfon and Anglesey MC.
I had been preparing an A series Manta for months and it was touch and go if it would be ready, but managed to MOT it on the Saturday morning. However, the Post Office was closed by the time I got there so no tax disc.
I phoned the RLO to see if he would allow us through scrutineering without a tax disc but his immediate answer was NO!, so I managed to ring off without giving my name!
After much deliberation we decided to take my company car instead. This was a four door 1.6 Ascona!
Our total rally preparation was plugging the Don Barrow Poti into the cigarette lighter socket.
No problem at scrutineering with the change in entry but it was amusing, while plotting, to see the RLO examining every ones windscreen to see who was sporting a Guiness label. He must have been really disappointed!
We had a great run and while everyone else had fuel worries on the 100 mile sections we averaged 20 to the gallon!
No disgrace coming where we did considering the opposition and our biggest difficulty was persuading Marshall's we were actually competing when we charged into controls with no spot lamps and lap and diagonal belts on!
Didnt put a scratch on it either and the boss was none the wiser when I parked it up in the office car park on Monday morning.
