The opposite, a damn slow rack so that you had some mechanical advantage to allow you to actually turn the wheel.

Mine's a 12"er, and it does obscure the instruments

I'd post a picture but I'm banned from that at the moment!

Rack is 2.25 turns lock-to-lock and it's fine with 205 front tyres.
