    Greetings from Bonnie Scotland

    Hi all,

Finally joined the forum after a long time lurking.

As a lifelong Stratos fan I'm now starting to get a serious notion to own one; well a rep obviously. Much as I'd love to build one, my mechanical skills are extremely lacking and it would be a daunting task for me to undertake however I do have the space, and the time, and some handy friends...

Ideally though I think I'd like to find a sorted LB STR but they are pretty scarce things to say the least. In the meantime I'll just keep an eye on the forum and learn a bit more before committing to any kind of a purchase.

    Cheers.

Greetings Iain, - proper Scottish spelling too

Welcome to the club, after completing your apprenticeship as a lurker. If you're serious about getting hold of a Strat, then you're right to be honest with yourself regarding your abilities. Plenty of people are going full turnkey these days, although the old spirit of kit car building hasn't totally died out yet! You could do what I've done, which is build it up to a particular stage, and then get it finished by someone with better motor control and hand-eye coordination, so it doesn't have mis-drilled holes all over it.

Used (or "previously enjoyed", as they used to say in the hallowed realms of 2nd-hand IBM mainframes) cars do come up, but you'll have to be patient and be prepared to act quickly when they do. Well, except for the Pirelli-liveried Hawk on Ebay and Car & Classic with the ever moving price....

As usual, any questions, ask away, and have fun deciding which way you and your friends are gonna jump. Talking of friends, are they actually aware of your musings, or are you still working out a way of luring them across to toil on your folly...?

    Hi Norm,

Belated thanks for the warm welcome.
Appreciate your advice re building a car; sounds like a nice compromise to build to a certain stage then hand it over to be finished by a professional even though that will obviously cost a bit.
I've swithered over a couple that were for sale fairly recently but they were snapped up really quickly; the completed red LB car last year looked amazing but the timing wasn't right for me then. Friends are aware of my musings and seem keen to be involved but luring up to my place to work on the car may require some financial incentive..! I've only ever seen 1 ( lime green I think ) on the road and that was many years ago on a Pistonheads run up here but I've always had a thing for rally/motorsport derived cars and a Stratos is a box that needs ticking...!

Hi Renmure, I'm in Angus, from Arbroath originally but now live up one of the Angus glens. Think I've seen your car on Pistonheads forum , it looks amazing, I'd love to see it sometime.
    Cheers,

Hi, I lived in Arbroath for a few years and am now out in the countryside just beyond Friockheim so still fairly local. Happy to meet up so you can get a closer look when it arrives home. Jim

Ah, think I know where you are. That would be brilliant, I’d love to take you up on that. I’m not a full member on here yet so I’m not sure if you can PM me? When are you getting the car back?

Haha, yeah, the clue is in the name

I'll try and send a message and see if it works. I've not physically got the car yet but guess it can't be long now.

Great; I’ll look forward to that. Think we may have a mutual friend (on Facebook) as he shared a pic there recently of a stratos engine/ rear end but wouldn’t tell me where it was or whose it was just that it was local😐. Your car surely?
    cheers,
    Iain
