    Re: Hydrogen verses Electric

Until there is a very significant investment into the generation of green H2, burning it in an ICE is way worse than using the oil directly, apart from local air pollution (which can be mitigated). It’s also important to remember that an H2 ICE still needs to deal with NOX and that they are shockingly inefficient.

Raises good points about the unsuitability of batteries for that kind of application though.

I think ‘we” are going to have to change how we do things myself. Life is going to get less convenient and more expensive I suspect.

    Chris,
JCB have been running extremely lean mixtures to deal with the NOX issue, and you still have the option for catalytic conversion

Indeed, just making the point that they aren’t pollution free at the point of use unless operated properly…and as we know, no plant operator ever has skimped on servicing etc…

Very lean isn’t ideal for NOx though is it? want’s to be at stoichiometric so the CAT can work properly I thought.

Jason of EE did one of his typically whiteboard-heavy pieces on the Toyota H2 ICE racecar attempt.

The shocking efficiency penalty might be worth paying in some situations, but the complaints about batteries being inflationary can equally be made about introducing a horribly inefficient alternative fuel…that’ll be expensive. Even if we had the cheap green electricity and H2 production infrastructure, unless the power is free, it’ll still cost more to use H2 than running batteries.

Ultimately, you can’t expect the turkey to vote for xmas can you. JCB rely on ICE, they’ll do anything to keep it.

    Sadly, I don’t have an answer and don’t like just saying “it’s daft”….but it’s daft I think!
