Cathal Curley drove my car all day, 200 miles, 80 years old!!! Absolute legend and and true gent, we had a real laugh and he told some great stories about his days driving for Chequered Flag, most can’t be repeated.

    Re: Camel Hawk

Cathal loved the car, but was unnerved by how “nervous” it felt on any gravel sections on the wide Pirelli Corse Classic wets, which is understandable, but it was fine on the tarmac. He thought the engine was great (standard 12v Busso”, and the car was well screwed together. A credit to Chris Smith who originally built it!!! He could believe we had a heated screen and electric windows.

It ran faultlessly and he didn’t roll it, so as he said ‘ a fine alternative to an original one’. He roared with laughter when I suggested that he was a fine replacement for Per Inge Walfriddsen who had been too unwell to come.

Most memorable part of the event though was Louise Aitken Walker telling us just how close she was to drowning when she rolled the Astra into the lake back in the day. Lucky, lucky lady!

Hopefully Cathal will arrange for us to take the car over to a couple of retro events he is involved with in Ireland.

Do let us know if you travel over to Ireland, would be great to see your car and meet up, last weekend was the Deja-Vu Donagh rally day based in Donegal town a fantastic day with many rally cars from down through the years taking part also some replica/tribute cars.
