Some note on importing classic cars.

This isn't something you should rely on and if anyone in the UK is contemplating purchase please check directly with HMRC. You may have to rely on recorded chassis and engine numbers that used to appear on the DVLA website and, given it's had an engine change with Enzo, that may cause headaches. Do your research chaps!

I was genuinely interested in this car so what I'm writing here is not to scupper the sellers sale, it's based on what I checked with HMRC and DVLA on this specific car.

The car was permanently exported by Enzo and is marked thus at DVLA against reg AEE 11W.

HMRC confirmed that it would attract 20%vat. They didn't mention 10% import duty and I didn't ask..

They said the only way this could be brought back in without tax dues was if the new owner (Enzo) had had the V5 changed to his name before taking it out of the country. Then only he could return it to the UK and re-register it with DVLA. Sadly he confirmed to me that he didn't change the V5 and probably no-one ever anticipated this scenario whilst we were in the EU...

I've no idea whether any other "methods" could be used to bring it back with taxes. I just decided to make my own enquiries to find out the facts as best I could...

As has been said, it'll probably easily find a buyer on the continent where everything will be more straightforward..

    That's that then...

    Well done Enzo.
I think you timed that right, given that we won't be able to afford petrol next week?

Well done Enzo…a fast and good sale then!
Maurik is a lucky buyer so, hope he won’t use it in Dakar classic race
And We will see again the car in events like you in Eifel festival or other great events!
Please could you advise him to join the SEC!
    Ciao

Congratulations on the sale Enzo - I guess a move to Holland is a little closer to the UK! Good luck with whatever you replace it with!

Well done on the quick sale, Enzo - and congratulations to Maurik, who bought the car (if he comes on here....say Hi if you do).

Proof, for those that needed it, that if you've got a Stratos replica of ANY type, it's worth serious money these days. Obviously Enzo's/Maurik's is an extremely nice one, but it just shows how the market has changed - I got £6000 for my Allora back in '92...I'd like to think that even in its current semi-restored state, current owner Ste would improve on that by quite a bit if he chose to sell!
