    Help needed

As you may know my car has a gearbox problem and needs to be removed from the car.

I was hoping to be able to remove the box with the engine left in place but this is apparently not easily achievable.

Therefore I have no choice but to remove engine and gearbox together and separate the box.

I have everything set up ready for engine removal, everything is disconnected, water and fluids drained, crane connected and ready to go - but I dont have any assistance to help with this operation (I dont want to risk trying it single-handedly)

Is there anyone in the South of England in the region of Sussex prepared to lend a hand ? I will happily buy you a lunch at the riverside pub down the road following successful extraction. Theoretically it should take no more than an hour to lift the engine out. (this will be the third time in a year so I'm well-practiced in what needs to be done - in fact I'm thinking of installing Dzus fasteners on the engine mounts)

    Thanks

    Peter

    Peter,

I managed to take the gearbox out of my Hawk on my own, to replace the clutch plate.
The engine was supported on a spare wheel and a block of wood.

I refitted it with the aid of some Fiat/Lancia conversion wheel studs, screwed into the bolt holes ('same thread M12 1.25)

I too have single-handedly removed the gearbox from a Hawk to change the clutch. Being more sophisticated, I used a trolley jack to support the engine. Engine crane took the weight of the gearbox and I also used studs to assist realignment. IIRC all the engine connections remained, as did the wishbone/hub.
It were a right bugger of a job being singlehanded, but doable.. Swearing helped a lot.

Thanks both Chrises and Enzo - it's good to see that it can be done - and I'm well practised with the swearing at things mechanical (and electrical) ! You've inspired me to have another think about this .
Paul - thanks - I will contact you - a second pair of hands would be useful.

I made some notes when I was doing it to save on the swearbox if I ever had to do it again. I can't guarantee that I've not omitted something, but it looks feasible!

    Re: Help needed

Thanks Chris - a good set of notes and the sequence and procedure would be equally applicable for an LB.

In the event I had already disconnected everything on the assumption that I was going to remove engine and box as a unit - before I saw the various comments by Club members on gearbox only removal. With some help from Paul (PAB56) I now have the gearbox out and placed with a repair specialist near Gatwick. It hasnt yet been opened up so I dont know how bad the problem is - but I've asked for photos and will report further in due course.

Thanks to all for your comments - and to Paul for his assistance. I'll keep you posted on progress.

    Re: Help needed

I've done a couple of gearbox removals on my Strat (Hawk) and always with the engine in place. Main point was to loosen/remove some of the mounts and raise the left side of the motor (as Chris included in his useful notes).

I hadn't helped myself by using studding as a guide so will have to bear that in mind if I do have to take the box out again at some time...
