And to answer my own question, now I've looked more closely at the second photo Michel
attached in his first post you can clearly see "21st Rally San Remo" and car 16 which was definitely 1979.
The crashed car is indeed a Grifone car. You can see a decal on the rear clam above the registration which, according to the competition history compiled by Thomas Popper in the back of Nigel Trows book, was GE 714317.
He started to use GE 714317 in 1979. Was that accident on the San Remo that year?
Tabaton later also used GE739328 in 1980, shared TON12661 with Perssuti and Pirro on the Giro in 1980 and competed on into 1982. In the later events he used TON14329, the same car which Alen used on the 1981 RAC starting at Chester but didn't finish due to an accident.

Just to confirm that the the crashed Tabaton silver 'SIAS' 'GRIFONE' 1979 San Remo rally car is:
Italian registration - GE 714317
According to Frederic that is chassis number 001979
The chassis number of the car in question is .................?

GE 739328
'Just as an aside to this:
The Tabaton OLIO FIAT 1980 San Remo Stratos was registered GE 739328
This was the actual car that carried the Rothmans colour scheme that Ken Tomblin's car is a replica of.
I'm sure Ken said it survives to this day with that OLIO FIAT colour scheme.
I can't find any recent photos of it, but here it is in period:

Exact Chris!
As you know Grifone was a semi-private team located in Genova and created by Luigi Tabaton (Fabrizio's father) and sponsored by Olio Fiat
They raced a few Stratos with engines prepared by University Motors
As said the first one was destroyed during San Remo in 1979 and the second one used by Fabrizio in italian championship in 80 and early 81
No information found about Chassis number of this one and no more trace in the next decades about this car...maybe it was on entry list in rally legend 2011 but no pictures found!
The Rothmans car seems to be a different car driven by Jorge De Bagration who had no link with Grifone team...

Yes Chris, GE is for Genova at the difference of Lancia works cars with TO
Here the same car and registration with a white livery ...but it's a bit curious that there is no further information about this car which seems to have disappeared!!
Was the car destroyed in race too or re-used with another paint scheme and Plate???
